SCBWI Illustrator Retreat

Last weekend, I attended an illustration retreat at the Dumas Bay Centre in Federal Way, Washington. Organized by the SCBWI chapters from Western Washington and Oregon, the retreat was a weekend filled with delightfully challenging workshops led by Kelly Murphy and Sergio Ruzzier.

In addition to the great faculty, it was energizing and inspiring to be surrounded by the sixty or so other illustrators who attended. It was an incredible weekend and I feel honored to have had the chance to go. The fun of the retreat is over, but I'm excited to return to my troll hole and continue drawing and experimenting.

Here are a few paintings from one Kelly Murphy's workshops, which involved experimenting with color palettes.

Here are a few drawings from Sergio Ruzzier's workshops, which involved lots of inking and thinking.

Thanks for visiting!

Milo's Garden, Pages 2 & 3

At the beginning of this year, I started kicking around picture book ideas about dreams and nighttime. The ideas evolved into a 32 page wordless picture book I titled Milo's GardenThe book is about Milo, an aspiring gardener who attempts to grow a mysterious seed. But each night, a mischievous gang of strange, whimsical creatures clamber into his garden and muck things up.

Here are some process pictures for a double page spread I recently finished. I've been using acrylics and color pencil on watercolor paper.

Howdy Folks!

Greetings one and all! I am an illustrator/animator operating out of Colorado in the USA. In a short while, I will be graduating with my BFA from Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design.

Lately, I've been visiting the zoo with a few friends who are also illustrators. I thought I'd start this blog by sharing some drawings and paintings from those trips.

This is a quick color sketch (about 5 x 3 inches) of the giraffes. I used acrylics on a scrap piece of mat board. It's always fun drawing and painting at the zoo, people love to comment and share stories.

Here are a few quick sketches I drew in pen. This summer there are a couple of young giraffes at the zoo. I very much enjoy watching them as they strut jauntily about.
