SCBWI Summer Conference 2016

At the end of July, I visited LA for the Annual SCBWI Summer Conference. The four days were filled with sessions by renowned professionals from around the children's book world, including several of my favorite authors and illustrators. Their presentations covered a variety of topics on writing and illustrating for kids, from practical tips to thought-provoking ideas on the creative process.

Getting to spend a long weekend immersed in children's books with the 1,000 other passionate attendees was a delightful experience; here are a few highlights:

Neal Porter talked in depth about his process of working with authors and illustrators, from first emails all the way to finished books. I was especially excited to hear him talk about one of my favorites, The Iridescence of Birds, and his collaboration with with the author Patricia MacLachlan and illustrator Jill Hadley Hooper.

Jon Klassen talked thoughtfully about the creative process during his keynote titled: "Finding Yourself in the Work." He gave examples of approaches artists have used to create work that is both innovative and authentic, and talked about how his own process has developed.

Drew Daywalt gave an inspiring keynote about his long journey to picture books, from writing scripts in Hollywood to his first kid's book, "The Day the Crayon's Quit." It was also inspiring to hear him use the word "jackanape," which prompted this sketchbook page of scribbles.

Illustrator promo cards! One of my favorites parts of attending SCBWI conferences. It feels so special to meet other artists and take a bit of their art home.

Near the end of the conference, my portfolio won an award in the illustrator showcase. This is my 12th SCBWI conference and the 8th time I've entered the showcase at one of the big conferences; it was really encouraging to see growth in my work and to be recognized. Above are postcards from a few of the winners, see the full list here.
